How is drywall quantity calculated?

Sheets are a straightforward area calculation. Compound, tape and screws are not — they depend on how many seams and how many sheets you end up with, which depends on the sheet size you chose. That is why this calculator derives them from the sheet layout rather than from a flat per-square-foot rule.

Where the 0.25 comes from

Take a 4×8 sheet hung horizontally on an 8 ft wall. It has one long tapered edge running 8 ft against the sheet above or below it, and one 4 ft butt end against the next sheet along. Every seam is shared between two sheets, so half of each belongs to this one: 4 ft plus 2 ft, which is 6 ft of seam attributable to 32 ft² of board.

Allowing for the perimeter seams that are not shared brings it to about a quarter of a lineal foot of seam per square foot of board. That is 0.82 metres per square metre, and it is the figure this calculator uses. It is worth knowing because it makes the sheet-size decision legible: bigger sheets mean fewer seams, which means less tape, less compound and — mostly — less sanding.

Switch the sheet size to 4×8 and the same room takes 19 sheets instead of 13. That is not the interesting difference — the interesting difference is that the 12 ft walls now carry a butt joint in the middle of each, and butt joints have no factory taper. You finish them by building a wide, very shallow crown by eye, and they are the seams that show under a lamp two years later.

What this calculator does not account for

  • Complex rooms. Sheet counts are area-based and assume offcuts get used. A room full of soffits, closets and jogs can run 15–20% over the area figure regardless of your waste setting.
  • Framing. Studs, plates, headers and blocking are not counted. Nor is furring on a masonry wall.
  • Finishing tools and technique. The compound figure assumes hand finishing with paper tape. Automatic taping tools and setting-type compounds both change consumption.
  • Texture and primer. Both are separate materials and neither is here.
  • Moisture and mould resistance. Bathrooms and other wet areas need the appropriate board or a tile backer, which is a different product at a different price. For tiled areas use the tile calculator's backer board option.
  • Access. A 4×12 sheet weighs about 82 lb and will not turn a tight staircase. That is a real constraint on sheet choice, and the arithmetic cannot see it.

Common questions

How many sheets of drywall do I need?

Divide the total board area — walls plus ceiling, less openings, plus a waste allowance — by the sheet area, and round up. A 4×8 sheet is 32 ft², a 4×12 is 48 ft².

For the 12 × 14 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling on this page: 540 ft² of board, 594 ft² with 10% waste, which comes to 13 sheets of 4×12. Buying 4×8 for the same room means more sheets and, more importantly, a lot more butt joints to finish.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 sheets?

Longer sheets if you can handle them. A 4×12 hung horizontally spans a 12 ft wall with no butt joint at all, and butt joints are the hardest seams to finish invisibly — they have no factory taper, so you are building a wide, shallow crown over them by eye.

The trade-off is weight and access. A 4×12 sheet of 1/2" board weighs about 82 lb and will not go up a turned staircase. That is why 4×8 exists, and why ultralight board has become popular.

How much joint compound do I need?

About one gallon per 100 ft² of board for a standard three-coat Level 4 finish. For a typical room that is one 4.5 gallon box per 450–500 ft².

Level 3 uses about 20% less because the final skim is lighter. Level 5 — a skim coat over the entire surface — uses roughly 60% more, and is only worth it where gloss paint or raking window light will show every seam.

How much drywall tape do I need?

Roughly a quarter of a linear foot of tape per square foot of board, plus your inside corners. That derives from the sheet layout: a 4×8 sheet hung horizontally on an 8 ft wall contributes one 8 ft tapered seam and one 4 ft butt seam per 32 ft², with each shared seam split between the two sheets either side of it.

For the example room that works out to about 135 linear feet of flat seam before corners — 1 roll of 500 ft tape.

When do I need 5/8 inch Type X drywall?

Three common cases. Ceilings on framing at 24 inches on centre, where 1/2" will sag — especially with blown insulation above it. Garage separations under IRC §R302.6: 1/2" on the garage side of the common wall, and 5/8" Type X on a garage ceiling with habitable space above. Any assembly with a fire rating, where the rating is tested with a specific board.

Type X has glass fibre in the core that holds it together longer in a fire. It is not interchangeable with standard 5/8" board where a rating is required.

How many screws per sheet of drywall?

About 32 for a wall sheet and 44 for a ceiling sheet at 16" framing — ceilings get more because they are fighting gravity. That works out to roughly 464 screws for the example room.

Screws should be set just below the paper surface without breaking it. A broken face has no holding power, and every one of them is a pop waiting to happen after the first heating season.

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a whole house?

As a rough planning rule, total wall-plus-ceiling board area runs about twice the finished floor area for a typical house layout with 8 ft ceilings — so 500 ft² of floor is roughly 1,000 ft² of board (21 sheets of 4×8), 1,000 ft² of floor is roughly 2,000 ft² (42 sheets), and 2,000 ft² of floor is roughly 4,000 ft² (84 sheets). This is a rough multiplier for a full house, not a substitute for the room-by-room tool above, which accounts for your actual wall lengths, ceiling height and openings.
